need computer help please

Alright, so there are three differant files on my computer, and when i go to delete them they say "cannot delete file, the filename you specified is invalid or too long, specify a differant filename". When i try to re-name the file i get the same error message. I have absolutely no clue where these files came from, but i cannot delete them in safe mode either. In addition, norton doesn't seem to think they are a problem.......Any ideas?
thanks,
Ryan

Don't be in such a hurry to delete files...especially if you don't know what they are!
What are the filenames?

i guess thats a valid point. One of my friends actually found them while working on my computer. The file names i do not want to post for obvious reasons, but lets just say that the files are "obscure". I have no idea how they got there, and the seemed to be created over a year ago(!?!?). I like to be able to let anyone use my computer at any time, without having anything to hide, and now i feel like i do. I guess thats why i want them gone. thanks,
Ryan

thank's spock. I'll let you know if it works. I hate finding crap like this on my computer, it really does frusterate me. I've accidentally downloaded files like this before, but only because they were piggibacked onto another file. Normally i catch them pretty quick, i'm suprised i'm finding these a year later. Moving all the other files should be fun, theres 2.5gb of them......thanks again

Gotcha!
I just wanted to make sure you weren't trying to delete some system files. Anyway, try running scandisk (fixing errors) and restart in DOS and delete the files from there.

To Defrag you need to stop all other programs running in the background, try Ctrl+Alt+Del and stop everything except Systray and Explorer. After your done try the Scandisk then reboot.

BTW, you may want to create a new Restore point in your backup tool, it's no guarranty that it will save you in the even of a SNAFU, but it may help.

oh yeah, for some reason i cannot run scandisk on my computer. It tells me i need to defrag first. Then, when i try to defrag, it keeps telling me its' been interupted more than ten times and has had to restart yada yada yada(even in safe mode). This computer's almost dead anyways, the sound card crapped out on me the other day. The computer wouldn't even start with it in it....i'm really looking forward to getting a new laptop....

If you're using WinME and you think that your computer is slow, try to get rid of WinME and install WinXP (Home or Pro) and you will be delighted to see that your computer seems to run 2x faster! WinXP is 100 times better than WinME IMHO.

WinME was the worst and most bloated OS that Microsoft has ever produced. It's complete junk.
