Music/electronica recomendations?
I'm looking to get turned on to some new(er) music - I'm not a big commercial FM listener, in fact I don't listen to commercial radio becuase I simply can't handle all the advertising. Anyhow I am a big NPR listener - in Los Angeles we have an excellent station - 89.9 KCRW - but because of work I don't get to listen much when there is music being broadcast.
Things I like but am are getting a bit tired of: Fatboy Slim Morcheeba Groove Armada Checmical Brothers Moby Air Everything But The Girl (still a favorite) Any thoughts? It's been a long time since I've heard something that I think is worth listening to! Seems like back around the early 90s there seemed to be a lot more interesting things going on musically. |

If you're a KCRW listener, you've already got everything you need, even if you can't listen live (I've been a member for about 10 years, even when I lived in Asia, Europe and Utah). Jason Bentley's Metropolis show has the kind of electronic music you're looking for, he's on 8-10 every night. Liza Richardson's show "The Drop" (Sat. 6-9pm) and Tricia Halloran's "Brave New World" (Sat. night, midnight to 2am) are also excellent, as is Morning becomes Eclectic with Nic Harcourt (9am-noon).
If your schedule doesn't let you listen to these live, you can also listen to them online at www.kcrw.org when you're not working, and Metropolis is archived. The DJ's note the artist and title, so if you hear something you like you can track it down (they also publish their playlists online, archived, if you can't write it down). Also, KCRW publishes 10x5, a list of DJ favorites that changes monthly. If you generally like the DJ's taste, you'll like their picks. Finally, KCRW has released 4-5 cd's of the live sessions on Morning becomes Eclectic; these are a great intro to artists you might like to follow up on. When I land at LAX, the first thing I do in the rental (after moving the seat back) is program 89.9 to preset 1 (along with KROQ on 2 for old times' sake and Kevin and Bean). |

Good 'ol Kraftwerk! I do like the Tour de France 2003 track. I have the original on 12" vinyl!
I also liked Art of Noise - have they done anything worth listening to? |

TKD!! Wow, your musical tastes are almost identical to mine.
You might like an artist called the Grassy Knoll. The Knoll is Bob Green, with various guest musicians and they put out only 3 albums. This music can best be described as "grunge jazz," and is the coolest stuff I've heard in a long time. Also from my collection: Charlatans UK Orbital Naked Funk Povi Dandy Warhols Meat Puppets Crystal Method Banco de Gaia Portishead

If you like ethereal electronic music, try Delerium. I love their sound.

Yeah, I forgot about Delerium. They are on the respected Nettwerk label, along with other talents like Single Gun Theory, Suzanne Little, and even MC 900 ft. Jesus!
Oh, I forgot to include in my list above: Dead Can Dance...wickedly talented

The guys in Delirium are the same guys in Front 242. Something for your book of useless knowledge.

Thanks for all the input! Friend at work put in some Delirium today (onto our MP3 server/jukebox). Cool stuff!
There's a really cool groove at the end of this peugeot comercial - does anyone know who this is? I really like it - or any music that is like this - check it out, it's quite funny. http://www.peugeot.de/aktuell/video.php3 |

One of the more ecclectic choices that I have is Witchcraft. Very unique stuff. I also listen to a program called Musical Starstreams on 107.5 here in Dallas. The program runs from 00:00 to 02:00 Monday mornings. They have a website, www.starstreams.com where you can look up the stations where they are aired nationwide. Good stuff to listen to. They are also played on an XM channel - don't know which one. The same producers also have a lable called waveform records. LOTS of good stuff to choose from!!

That program is still around? I used to listen to it back in the 80's, but lost track of it along time ago. Thanks for the link!
