How to get rid of the HORSE HAIR odor in old MB cars.

Dear friends:

My friend got a 1980 W116 300SD. The seats are MB-Tex.

The problem is that the smell inside the car is really aweful, and I believe that this smell emanates from horse had pads under the seats. Is there any product or a way to help alleviate or get rid of this horse hair smell?

Is it easy to remove the MB-Tex cover and throw away the underlying horse hair pads?

Thank you very much for your precious information.

Best regards,

Eric

Whoa there fella.

While the smell may be in the pads, it probably isn't the horsehair itself, which is washed and usually bleached and coated when formed into the seat pads.

What humans define as an odor usually is associated with some form of decay, so check the site of the smell for something that is rotting or rotten, which might not exclude the pads.

First thingI would do is have the carpets shampooed, the headliner washed, and the trunk shampooed.

I would also remove the interior seats completely, to shampoo the carpets, to make sure to get under the seats.

You'd be amazed what you will find under the seats of a used car.

My car had crayons, some chocolate, candy wrappers, parts of toys and some other stuff under the seats. WhenI got the car, first thign I did was take out the seats, clean and vaccuum, and shampoo all the carpets and cleaned the headliner and the door panels.

My car doesn't have any bad odors.

Best thing to do is get it professionally cleaned by an auto detailer that does interiors.

What's foul about the smell of horse hair?

I enjoy the aroma of an old Benz, very aromatic and part of the mystique. I also enjoy the aroma of horse hair when I'm grooming too.
