Washing Machine Question

OK, so my wife and I bought into all the hype and a couple of years ago we bought a Maytag. It's been working fine but now it's not spinning all that well, which is the same problem we had with the old washing machine. I'm sure you know about it, the clothes are still a little wet. The repair man came over today and told her it was a Nordge washing machine. Maytag bought Nordge from Montgomery Ward.

The repair man said Whirlpool is the best but now I have no idea what to believe. I expected this thing to run longer than a few years and not need a new transmission.

I was wondering if I were to change the fluid to Amsoil or another synthetic would that take care of my problem? The heat buildup would be less with the synthetic oil. I haven't heard any belt squeeling so it must be a direct drive.

What causes the slippage?

Any help appreciated, and no, I haven't looked at the guts or the service manual.

Regards

I was gonna suggest the tranny might be going south, but you already made that call.

Try throwing lighter loads rather than loading to the max, that might help save a little wear-n-tear on the next tranny.

I guess the Maytag Guy isn't quite as lonely anymore!

If the machine is a direct drive, it is usually the motor coupler...here is a pretty good tutorial on inspecting it yourself:

how to inspect motor coupler for washing machine

...how old is your machine? I just went through a washing machine nightmare...that is why I had that link handy...we had an old Maytag that diligently did a load of laundry a week for 20 years before the waterpump went south...in the spirit of being "thrift", I was down on my hands and knees with a flashlight in a big puddle of soap water tryin' to figure out how to fix it...after a week of playin' handyman...I gave up...the matching Maytag dryer was getting old too, so for aesthetic purposes, I thought I would just buy a brand new set...so I blew a fortune on this new Maytag set that was Energy Star compliant, computer-controlled, and sported a fancy touchpad on it...for some odd reason, the dark clothes I wash now have white lint sticking onto it when I take it out after the spin cycle...my old 20 year old machines didn't have this problem...oh well...
