well, to be honest, I've been running windows XP for the past 2 or 3 years, and it's been rock solid no matter what (and I've gone through 3 video cards, 3 sound cards, 2 network cards, 2 hard drives, 3 mobo's, 3 processors, and 3 sticks of ram). I think microsoft just has a bad reputation from windows 98 and windows ME, because they would crash all the time, independant of any change in hardware.

MS DOS was a very stable operating system. Windows up thru 3.1 was just DOS with a pretty front end interface. These were all reasonably stable. Win 95 was less stable, at least in my applications, but still acceptable. I thought Win98 sucked, until Win ME came along and showed what real sucking was. NT is stable, and XP, being an NT derivative, also is usually stable. The problem with Microsoft is that they don't do sufficient product testing prior to a release, resulting in major bugs, they put out insecure products, and their method of dealing with competiton is to absorb good products into their operating system, or to squash them.

As far as the hardware issues, the various flavors of Linux have the same challenges, but are far more stable...

I would not want to drive a car with windows related softwares in it. Microsoft is not a professional car product company. Its softwares are designed mostly for pc platform machines. Softwares that run modules integrated into cars are a lot more different. They should serve a single purpose and serve only that purpse. These software should not be combined with pretty interfaces that might be prune to incompatibilities. Wireless download to upgrade your ABS brake system?? That is the most stupid/ absurd idea i've ever heard. You should only get an upgrade if its done at your dealership.

why can't APPLE make a car!!! i doubt they'd do the software because the whole premise of apple is it makes the hardware and the software together. and thats' why it works seemlessly.

i do the advertising for iPod and Mac.. so im a bit biased. but there's a lot of truth in it.

Windows CE sucked way back when, what would make it better now? I'm sure you could do a full install of Win95 in the same space 2006 WinCE would take.

Why would car companies pay for copies of Windows, when they can get Linux for free? It looks like M$FT is going for another proprietary play like they tried with the server market.

Good one, Homie! I missed that before. Yeah, that's what I do everytime I sit down in front of my computer anymore: wince! I'll be glad to see this ine bite the dust, because I am buying a MAC the next time no matter how much they cost. If software I need is not written for OS X, I'll find some way to get by without it.

Oh yes, I am a Microsoft shareholder, BTW. THAT's just one more reason to be displeased with the company.

Car electronics have already gotten stupid, IMHO. I took my mother car shopping in 2000. She had her heart set on an Acura sedan. The one they gave us to test drive had the screen in the middle of the dash that handled the navigation system, the HVAC, and maybe some other stuff. Nobody in the car, not me, not the salesman, and especially not my mother, could figure out how to get the navigation system to stop giving verbal directions to us. It was embarassing. These systems are clearly inferior to manual systems and it pisses me off that they keep forcing this crap on us.

BMW has that big knob that is supposed to control everything. I've never tried to use it, but when it came out nobody could figure it out. It's crazy. Give me a lever or knob marked with red and blue to indicate hot and cold and another lever or knob with icons showing where the air is going. I will take that system over a computerized system any day of the week.

When my adopted Dad was a young man, they had a system in place where a car salesman knew most of what he/she sold. You see the truck salesman and he knows the trucks inside and out. You tell him what you want to do and he tells you what you need. Fast Foraward to 91. I was buying a 91 Pontiac Firebird Formula. The salesman didn't even know as much about the options as I did. Why? Today he works for Pontiac tomorrow he works for Ford and the next day he works for Chrysler. My MB salesman has been there for more than 10 years and knows which car I am talking about and what the common features are and how to work it. Part of what you are describing is that the salesman doesn't really know the product inside and out. I worked at Best Lies for a while. I knew each and every computer inside and out and all the specs. Most of the others didn't. Guess who sold more product and service plans.

My 01 Excursion has what you are describing for vent controls. Personally, if I could have gotten an 02 with the electronic controls, I would have. I love the 210's AC control. No turning it up or down if it gets too cold or hot or how fast I want the fan to go. The wife has one temp and I have another.

Window levers. What is wrong with cranking your own windows?

None of my cars have cranked windows, but my old Mazda 626 did. I remember giving some kids a ride and several of them had never seen a hand-cranked window. They were like Tom Hanks' character in "Big."
