Angry W123-rear swinging arm bolts-a pig!

Hello Everybody,
Can someone please help me. I have recently refitted the rear sub frame/diff/suspension, back up in my 1981 W123 230TE Estate, after fitting new parts including new swinging arm bushes, so far so good. But here is my problem the manual I have says to delay tightening the swinging arm bolts untill the full weight of the car is on the suspension, the bolt near the centre of the car is no problem as it is accessible. On the other hand the outer bolt, I am unable to even get a standard socket on either the bolt-head or nut, much less a torque-wrench. Is there a simple remedy I'm missing or a special tool.

Any input gratefully recieved
David

Talking keep me posted please! (w123 rear suspension)

David
i went looking for your updated post with no luck...please keep me posted on that information as reading your situation i now have to rethink my battle plan. My dads best friend has a frame puller that you drive on to (or get towed on to) and you can use it as a lift too. would it be better to do this maintance on that machine? or is it just the geometry of the mercedes? the front suspension was easy...that was last winter, latter this winter is the rear suspension.
thanks alot and good luck-
jake

Hello Jake,
I've posted a reply to your own post, but one thing I forgot to mention, a suggestion that came out of this post (on the Tech forum ) by (sbourg) Steve, was the use of "crows-feet" although a very good idea, they will not work in this situation due to the recessed arrangement of the bolts/nuts.But utilising the same idea I am attempting to make a similar tool using a socket rather than the open-ender of the crows-feet.

Please get in touch direct if I can help
further David
