I am closely looking at a 1986 560SEL (140K miles) this weekend, smoke silver with Palomino interior. The exterior and interior looks real good. The car has alot of new parts including timing chain, tensioner, AC, and tires. Everything works on the car, but they said you have to help close the sunroof. The car looks great in the pictures. Not too much on the books but plenty of records for repairs. They are asking $5000, what do you think? should I hold out for something newer?? I know this is a gas guzzler 14 to 18 MPG, it would be my wifes car and I would drive it on weekends..Thanks!

Sunroof need some MB sunroof paste, most likely. No one uses it except dealers and very good MB indy shops, it's expensive. Nothing else works, though, and BuyMBParts will sell you a couple ounces for $5.

SPOCK:

Unless someone drove it a long time with bad nitrogen cells, the rear struts (they really aren't shocks) will be fine.

If the rear end sits normal height, the worst you will be out is accumlators. Will ride VERY hard in back with bad accumulators (nitrogen cells), since the rear suspension cannot move, only the tires flex. If it sags at the rear, take a look. Leaking struts have to be replaced, but a loose swaybar to valve link can also make the rear droop, so can being low on fluid from a leak in the piping somewhere.

Do a search, this is the same suspension used in the W116 6.9, and the W123/W124 TD/TE wagons.
