FWIW, I have decided that internet usage is......
counterproductive for me in my office.
My CPU(at my office) has been out for repairs for 5 days, and I realize that surfing the internet is has caused me to be lazy and non-productive. For the time it's been down at the office , I noticed I start working right away, my drivers see that I'm active and are slowly but surely, moving aroung and actually doing things they are supposed to do, leaving to go on their routes earlier, etc.... I realize that I am the one who has to control how, when and for how long, but it real easy to sit there and peck away, searching any and every topic that interests you an dlose track of time. From now on I will limit my non-work related usage to the afternoons, after I have completed my tasks. Additionally, all employees will not be allowed to use the cpu for personal reasons. Anyone else care to chime in?

I noticed this quite a long time ago, If I want to get something down, I pack up my home computer back in to its box. I do need it for school assignments and all, but once summer comes along, this box does nothing but collects dust. At work however, it's a different story

Plantman, I agree. It uses up a lot of time, and maybe even more importantly this is (well, sometimes) thinking time, on a quality board like this, and so is really distracting. There was a CEO in the UK who banned the use of email entirely by his staff because of this, claiming that productivity soared afterwards. I guess you can see if you make more $ as a consequence.

While I use computers daily, and have done so for 22 years, I never screw around on the web while at work. Doing so is tantamount to stealing from the folks who pay me.

I agree with you Lebenz. I struggle with that. I really need to move onto a job where I can feel more productive. But since I'm planning on moving out of state next summer and changing jobs then, I just stick with this place. But I'm bored to tears most days.

I think the whole computer industry itself is a self-perpetuating swindle of the highest order. Not since the pet rock has there been a marketing swindle like this. Except maybe cell phones.
It creates its own work and over-hypes 99% of what it actually does. Most websites and e-mail are all crap. I think most companies WOULD be more productive without a lot of the current technology they now use. It's my opinion that the majority of users today would actually do more work without a desktop PC. You know, like actually speak with people and get things done. And I'm in the industry. I'm an IT consultant/solution provider/technical smoke and mirrors master. ![]()

I work for Intel, my wife for AMEX. Company policy in both is,"no surfing" allowed. Most larger companies have moved in this direction already. Surfing can and is tracked by them. E-mail is different though. In the effort to become,"paperless" and to avoid group meetings, e-mail is a necessity. It got to the point five years ago, that I had three meetings a day! Hard to focus on projects with so many interruptions. Now it's three a week.

get more work done? what, creating more powerpoint presentations?
![]() ive sit thru more worthless timewasting overblown PP presentations than i can count. one major ceo/exec (larry erickson i think) at one point completly banned PP presentations from all company meetings. i cant argue than many waste their companys time on the net, but as is the case with everything before WWW, time was wasted in other ways. real productive people will still be productive, even with the www. |

The balance seems good over here. I do a lot of computer work, but spend only about 10 minutes total during the workday for personal stuff on the computer. That's usually when I'm eating lunch.
wrt computers promoting laziness / low productivity, self-discipline and focus can really be helpful. |

I must agree that Internet access lowers productivity.
My willpower's so bad that I'm here posting when I need to be working on a paper that's due tomorrow (actually, "later this morning" now ![]() |
