New Purchase

Since my 98 E320 is totalled, I now need a daily driver. My neighbor advised me last evening that he wants to sell his 1998 Jaquar XJ6, 33,500 miles, all options, white with tan interior. A real cream puff. I drove it. I was very suprised and pleased the way the car handled and the quality of the solidness of the car. He wants 12,000.00 for it. I checked into quality, reliability, etc. From what I researched the 98 are good cars. It's not a benz, but the history of this car is known, always serviced, price is right, mileage is very low and the car is imaculate. I checked with the Jaq. Dealers in my area and was advised that there was no problems with the New designed Jaqs from 97,98,99 and on. The 4.0 liter engine is very strong and the trans. is reliable. Told that the new Jaqs are very solid build. Picture of car attached. Opinions would be appreciated.

bruce, i think the XJ is one of the best looking sedans on the road.

ive wanted one forever. i shopped 6's a few years ago, but they were a little out of my desired range at the time. the 6 are falling quickly as now the pricing on the 8's has started sliding with a flood of lease returns. 12k sounds pretty good to me, especially given the mileage and history. you may have found a deal.

i especially like the carnival red and platimum XJ.

I've heard that the quality of the post-Ford Jaguar's is good.

However, I don't think it will have the same long-term durability as a Mercedes.

BTW. I'm not going to sell my Mercedes 92 SL for many years. I still love the Benz. It's just that this seems like a good deal at the right price. Can always sell if I'm not happy.

Sounds like a great deal and a creampuff. I'd have the car checked out by a certified mechanic just to make sure everything is ok but otherwise I'd go for it too!!

Only one word of warning. It's sometimes tough purchasing a major investment from a friend or family. Make sure that if you buy it and have regrets later you won't have sour feelings for that neighbor. Not worth ruining a relationship over something material.

For $12,000 how can you go wrong? Even for a Jag? How much more value is it going to lose? Drive it for two years and I'll bet you can get $10K for it if you don't run the odo to 200K. If you don't like it, sell it. That's the truly great thing about nearly-fully-depreciated used cars...

If I remember correctly, that Jag sold new for about the same price as a Mercedes E class. I wouldn't sell my E300 with 95K miles for less than $20,000. The Jag Bruce is talking about has a third the mileage, and just over half what I would ask for mine. Like John said, how can you possibly go wrong?

Well, I might be the only one here who thinks 12K is a bit much to say why not, as opposed to why? You can buy something better than that with 12 grand that wont come with nicknames like Chauncy and Purcival.

I heard the newer Jag is more reliable than the old ones. For $12K I don't think you can go wrong. I say go for it. I must admit Jag has always put out one of the better looking cars on the road.
