Good day for a leftist educator

I was awarded an Endowed Teaching Chair today. It comes as a result of a kind of American Idol competition for teachers at our school. Faculty are nominated to participate. The nominees put together a portfolio of their accomplishments and on the basis of that, some are asked to teach to a group of faculty. The winners of that step are passed along to our Foundation where we teach again. Two were awarded this year; one to me and another to a good friend in the Math department.
Clear rewards in education are not always easy to find, so this honor feels good. Besides, I thought it a good opportunity to get under the skin of everyone who detests the idea of liberals in education.

There's at least 12 different kinds of canoeing situations: Whitewater, Flatwater, Tandem, Solo, Decked, Open, Tripping, Racing etc.

Colorado University happens to be my alma mater, and I don't remember anything but liberal educators there. In any case, congratulations! It's always nice to be appreciated!

Good for you, Kerry. I'm sure you deserved it. I'm also certain they had to think hard about it, its awful difficult to reward people who are a constant challenge to status quo. That is the best kind of educator and philosopher and they recognized it in you.

A sincere congratulations to the recognition of your merit and accomplishment. I've sat through several faculty evaluations of a similar nature. At my alma mater, the students are also called upon to assist with the determination of faculty hiring and advancement. It's a grueling process...

Koop, you're right. I'd better enjoy it while I can. Horowitz was here in Denver last fall stirring up trouble and now we have an 'Academic Bill of Rights' under consideration in the legislature. I haven't read the text of the version under consideration, but if it's anything like the one on Horowitz's web site, it's Affirmative Action for the right.
I jokingly told the English search committee I am on, that I had sent our request down to the legislature for the political litmus test questions we must use.

Great idea. I think instead of litmus, which is basically useful for only acid/base testing (great analogy for Right/Left issues), I propose a sort of anti- "Philosopher's Stone" test. The test would be all-exclusive--it wouldn't pass anybody who's philosophy offended anybody. Only the purely innocuous could pass.
