+++ 1986 300E buying tips +++

I may be looking at a 300E 1986 @ 224k km for $4900 (asking)

Car : Never winter driven, very clean, great cond., luxury car, 4 doors, auto., sunroof, V6 gas eng., leather in A/C stereo, climate control, safety check, e-test. 224k km. $4,900 CDN

What should I look for and what would be a fair offer without insulting the guy?

Dan

There's no such thing as a 300E V6. It's a inline 6.

Besides that, you will want to check the tranny for flaring, 'clunking' when shifting between R & D and propably other things indicating a bad tranny.

You want to check that the engine is smooth idling and accellerating both cold and warm.
When you test drive it, try putting the shifter in 2 or 3 and accellerate to near redline, let off the gas for a few seconds and then gun it again while you look for smoke in the rear view mirror. (worn valve seals/guides)

You should check all of the bushings and control arms in the suspension. If they haven't been replaced they properbly will need to soon. -Also indicated by the car tramlining bad on the road.

Also check the engine mounts by shifting between D and R while looking at the engine (hood up). Does the engine tilt when shifting? = New mounts.

Make sure the sunroof is working properly. It's insanely expensive to fix if broken.

If there's any rust in the car, you will find it at the buttom of the doors, under those chrome fender flares, or in the trunk right below the tail lights.

Good luck

Freestyler pretty much hit on all the big things.

I've own mine for almost 3 years and I'm satisfied. So far the only MAJOR work that I had done on mine was the transmission....the rest were small things here and there that I could fix on my own. The car is not perfect, but for a 18yo car it's O.K.

What I like most about the car is it's simple design both in the interior and exterior. There's not too many fancy electronics and gadgets to break down. The engine is simple and pretty much straight forward. If you're not a DIY person, I'd stay far away from these cars because it can be a money pit. Thankfully mine is not.

Judging from the pic, the car looks good. the price is not that bad, I paid the same amount for mine. Get a PPI and if everything checks out, looks like you've found a great deal.

Good luck.

So I have seen the car. He was not there so the wifie gave the tour, she could hardly speek english and no french at all (middle east folks).
There is a small painted over bondo repair where the glass meets the metal (passenger side).
A 3 inche diametre spot off rust and bubble (passenger side) and a 6 inch crack in the fog light?
The engine does move a bit when I put it in gear and the tranny seems to make a sound as well.
The engine did not start immediatly but ran smood with no smoke.
It is the first time the I have set foot in this type of car so I can not juge dose symptoms.
The interior is burgandy and very clean, including the trunk (the ad said leather, it looks like MBtex to me but I may be wrong), the bottom part of the engine as a light crust of durt and oil. All elecrical works but I could not open the sunroof.
The mag weels are oxidised, suggesting winter usage at some point, maybe not by him but previous owner(s)!? The car as new tires. I drove it around the blok and the suspention / handling is tight.
I talk to him on the phone and he as no problem with taking it to a mecanic for inspection.
I asked him what would be is rock bottom price, is reply was "I'll take $200 off if it make you happy!"
The guy is a sweet talker, if you've been to a store owned by one of them, you know what I'm talking about.

Bottom line? I'll think about it!
But it aint going to be $4700, more like $4000 to $4200cdn.

Is there something special about this car? What condition are other 300Es in the price range?

If the PrePurchase Inspection checks out, I would not pay more than $3,500 USA dollars.

The sunroof will cost $$$$ to repair.

ONE euro head light will cost you approx $300 USA dollars to replace.

Getting new wheels will cost you $500-2000.

Body work and a paint job will cost you anywhere between $1000-3000.

I also have an 86 300E. My sunroof also don't work perfectly, I just keep it closed. My headlights have those nasty plastic USA covers. I bought a slightly used one from someone on this forum for $40. I bought new wheels for $1000. The paint on mine is O.K. I also have a couple of rust spots (but remember these are 18year old cars!) but I'm going to leave it alone for now. If the car is still running tight in 5years, I'll keep it and fix everything on it and give it a new paint job. I orginally bought it for $3,500 and put in about $4,000 in repairs so far. I've owned the car for 3years so that averges out to a little over $2000/year....sure beats having a $500/month car payment.

Rust is BAD!
If there's a 3" area of visible rust on the door, chances are you will need a new 'door plate'(sp?) or a whole new door.
In any case you'll need to get i painted afterwards, and it gan be hard to match the metallic paint perfectly.

"Sounds" from the tranny is usually not a good sign. = $$$

A non-working sunroof could be a blown fuse -or a totalled sunroof mechanism = $$$

You can buy a 300E in much better condition if you put the price for this one together with the money you already know you will have to spend on repairs on it..

You can get replacement lenses for Euro headlights. About $75, I think.

Rust is like an iceberg. If you see some, you can be sure there is a lot more under the surface.

Thanks to you all for your input....
After having meditated on the subject, I will not be buying this particular car.
