Advice on potential purchase...
Since the head gasket & AC evaporator have both gone on my '92 300E (199600miles), I have the chance to buy a '93 300TE wagon with the 104 engine with 174500 miles for $5k. It's in excellent condition, the AC apparently works and the only reported problem is the usual front seal leak. (though I haven't checked it out in person yet and don't know if it's had any major work done).
Do you think this is a good deal or I could expect the same problems I'm having with mine coming shortly?

If your 124 MB car shopping, buy a Freon checker gizmo at autozone when I bought my TE they were filling it before I went to look at the car and once I bought it I found that is was the evaporator.

MedMech- how does the freon checker work then?
is there any other way of checking the evaporator without getting the car on a lift? I'd like to get my local mechanic to check it but unfortunately the car is located about 50 miles from me.

In my ignorance, I can only assume he's referring to an AC sniffer, or a ultraviolet dye detector. But, I'm still learning basic AC to fix the NFG climate control on my own 124. |
