Your father was a good man. You also make forceful arguments when you take the time to post something, and I wish you did it more often.

My personal rememberance of the whole "America-Love it or Leave it" movement goes something like this: The war started going badly, and the young people of the country, who at that time because of the draft had a real dog in the fight, began the protest movements against the war that are well-known today. The conservatives of that time, were totally against any form of protest in those days, in fact the act of protest was considered "anti-American" and "Communist". Along with the "America - Love It or Leave it" buttons and bumper stickers, came a rise in police violence after a general demand by the right wing that protestors be subject to police beatings and mass arrests, which is exactly what started to happen. This resulted in protests becoming violent ugly confrontations between police and college students. The bumper stickers and buttons were the way people who actually were advocates of authoritarion violence against protesters, identified themselves to each other. Cops wore the buttons to work and put the bumper stickers on their patrol cars along with all the right wingers. It was the Hitler armband of its day, as far I'm concerned.

Nixon decided to go for some press, showing his right wing base what a tough guy he was, and starting calling out the National Guard on the protestors. All of this came to a head at Kent State University, where a National Guard commander, later identified as an ultra-conservative, ordered his men to load live ammunition and fire into a crowd of unarmed college students, killing five of them. IN an instance the American public realized that the people they were shouting "America-Love it or Leave It" at were their own children, who they were now killing. The national stomach turning revulsion this entire event produced was the beginning of the end of the Vietnam War, and the end of the right-wings role in national politics until the election of Reagan.

We didn't need any Fahrenheit 911, the entire murder of these people was caught on film, and everybody got to see what it was like to watch a young girl and her four friends die from bullet wounds on a sidewalk. I know where it leads to, and Bush is leading us into it, and I ain't going peaceful like.

This is what we are heading for in this country at the rate we are going. This is what leading a divided nation into a stupid war brings right here:
