Thumbs up Still Driving

I wonder how loud it would be sans any muffler / resonator ? .

FWIW, if you like the glass pack sound, there are 36" & 40" long ones that sound great and don't have the terrible tiring sound .

It would not be much louder than what I have.

I am actually pleasantly surprised at the lack of drone with this setup. Maybe I'm just used to the straight pipe exiting right under my seat, but i am not hearing much drone at all, even at higher RPM. My buddy with a W116 told me cabin noise is comparable to his car before he put sound deadening everywhere.

Decided to paint an extra chrome mirror cap I had, I will get a couple photos of it mounted tomorrow when it's light out. Here are some "in progress" shots while I painted it, and a cruddy night photo of it installed.

I also got the car tinted recently. Getting the old tint off the back window without damaging the defroster lines was a pain, took me about 5 hours (as opposed to the side windows at 2 minutes a piece).

I also did a nice new dash mat - custom made in a nice chocolate brown. It goes well with the Milan brown paint and bamboo interior.

I also finally did my brakes. New drilled and slotted rotors on all 4 corners. I was getting pretty tired of my brake squeal.

And of course, on my way to my first midterm I got a flat tire. About 2 miles from school. In heavy rain. After some exhaustive risk calculation, I made it to my midterm on time, with a flat tire. I know the tire is now garbage, but the rim did not take any damage. I can also confirm that it is nearly impossible to feel a flat in a W123. Sure it feels a little less steady, but otherwise no change in handling.

A flat tire is not alarming unless you try to turn.

A turbodiesel without a muff is not bad. That is how i have it in my 39 Studebaker. If you play with the throttle you can hear the turbo whine.

It sounds like a little cummins.

Thanks Bill! It's been a lot of work to get it to this stage, still needs some paint and seals (this rain has exposed some of the leaky spots).

Turning is the only time I even got a hint of an issue with this flat. Feels unsteady. But other than that the car drove completely normally. Love these old German vehicles. The straight pipe doesn't bother me at all, it really does sound like a baby Cummins. Turbo spool is great, but nothing compared to the K26 turbo that's on h3ffe's 300D (we've been working on it).

As promised, photos in decent light. Not a perfect color match, but when I paint the roof and doors I'll also have the mirrors sprayed at the same time. Currently it's only the one mirror that's painted (ran out of paint).

Thumbs up Looking Good ! .

I've always felt the tires as soon as they go flat....

Looking nice there, I like your 'sunset' license tag and the decal in the R.R. 1/2 glass .

? Air bag steering wheel ? is it connected ? .

I'd really like to hear your car, inside driving as well as out side .

I doubt I'll ever remove the muffler & resonator from my 240D but it's too noisy inside .

My Coupe, I removed one and forget which ~ I think it sounds a bit better, my son tells me I removed the wrong one .

Thanks Nate, as I mentioned before the license plate is a "reproduction" from Germany.

Air bag is not connected - the ring for the horn lines up perfectly with the W123 column, and the ring for the airbag does not connect to anything at all. I prefer the airbag wheel to the stock wheel. Feels much better to me.

Next time we meet up I'll let you hear it! Inside is not too bad, outside is a bit loud. I would recommend against straight piping your 240D - mine has a rebuilt OM617 with the turbo, so it's not nearly as loud as a non turbo would be. On your coupe you deleted the muffler and left the resonator - I think it sounds great - the resonator does most of the sound reduction anyway and your setup definitely is a bit more throaty than factory.

Post Open Exhaust

I'm old so I really like hearing the engine, not a blatting piece of crap like the fart can crowd, a good sounding engine in proper tune and never, ever a short pipe .

In the 1970's I ran a 1946 Chevy 3100 series pickup , 235 i6 and NO MUFFLER .

No one ever said it was loud, not even the Beverly Hills P.D. when I ran it up the rather steep hills there....

Soft camming makes for a mellow exhaust note as do crossovers on V - engines, placed as close to the exhaust manifold as possible .

40" long glass pack mufflers sound pretty mellow too .

I got one of those license tags from Germany, for the front of my coupe ~ it's the European shape (Rich hooked me up with the gasser version Euro front bumper) and they put a setting sun and the California bear on it with my alpha numeric to match the DMV....

So far so good .

I'd been thinking about a custom U.S. shaped rear plate with different coloring just for shiggles .

It is unfortunate, but I am reporting that the rebuilt OM617 has spun a rod bearing. I do not have the time or resources to tear apart the engine and fix or even diagnose it. It has a gnarley rod knock and I've gotten another vehicle already.

If anyone here is interested, please let me know. I will sell with all my spare W123 parts, since I no longer drive a W123. Tons of new parts, including a fully rebuilt 722.315. lots of parts should still be reusable, or just do new bearings in this engine.

Max - sorry to hear this. If you decide to part out the engine, I would be interested in the vacuum pump that you got from me. Thanks.
