Figured it out - what worked for me was sitting...

Figured it out - what worked for me was sitting in the back with the hatch partially down, after everything is disconnected you can slide the handle to your right and get enough room to then move it...

Just bought another w210 wagon. Found that the rear hatch does not lock - lock the doors and you can open the hatch setting off the alarm.

Ok removed the rear trim from the hatch - for reference...
