Oil pan gasket - M119 1992 400E
Went to change the oil on the new to me 400E and looks like someone buggered the drain plug in the past. Not wanting to risk the threads in the pan, I swapped the pan and drain plug from the parts car (also a 92 400E). Anyway, to get to the meat of the matter, in order to get the car mobile I had to reuse the old pan gasket. It is now dripping (I figured that this may happen as you generally don't reuse these gaskets). So the plan is to get a new gasket now, a check of the manual CD's does not indicate the use of any sealant, just clean surfaces and install at 9Nm. The M119 gasket is a hard type gasket NOT a rubber one. Do you need to wipe down the interior section so no oil weeps onto the surfaces while you do the install?
Any other recommendations welcome. Thanks Paul I did search but did not find anything specific. |

After a bit more searching found references to Hylomar or MB 003-989-98-20-10
Looks like I may have been able to avoid redoing the process if I had applied a thin coat of hylomar to both surfaces of the gasket (I have hylomar and have used it to seal machine tool surfaces which see lots of oil, says its good agains automotive fluids including oil), the MB stuff looks like it would work fine as well. Oh well still need to putll it apart again, may as well get a new gasket while I do that and probably use a very thin coat of sealant. Still welcome comments. Paul |

I have put the sub pans on with a new gasket but no sealer and it seems like they leak every time. Unless the two mating surfaces are PERFECT, the gasket inevitably does not seal properly. The only way to have PERFECT mating surfaces is to have two brand new components. I always use a thin layer of Mercedes 5900 sealant, part number 003 989 98 20-10 for insurance purposes. I hate doing things twice, especially when it is customer pay. Mercedes doesn't even use gaskets on the new stuff, just 5900 sealer. You might want to change the o-rings for the oil level sender while you have the pan off. The o-ring part numbers are 017 997 57 48 (1) and 017 997 58 48 (1). The sender connector goes through the block and is held on by a clip. Very easy to chabge the o-rings and worth the effort.

Thanks, Will go with the MB sealer, looks like I may reuse the gasket again as the dealer does not have them in stock - but they have lots of the sealer.
I'll check on the o-rings as well. Paul |
