A chugging (solved by revving) is a symptom of your big-ends being warn.

The trouble is that the W124 has a lovely big boot and a layer of metal-then-insulation-then-carpet to protect the passengers from the sounds of those golf-clubs rattling...

-- like 10-15 seconds on one start. :(

I can't get to the bottom of it.
