Rear Speaker Trouble
I am trying to remove the rear deck speakers in my 124.
I want to take out the speakers but leave hte grills and speaker housing in place in order to allow more bass flow through to the cabin via the subwoofer in the trunk. However, I cannot for the life of me remove the speaker grills. I have used the removal guide on mercedesshop.com and still have no luck. I was told to look for small holes around the speaker in which to push up with a screwdriver and i cannot locate these. It's a '93 300D, is it possible that mine is a little different? Everyone else who has done this operation has spoken to me about removing the speakers on a 87-89. Also - will I hear more bass coming in through such small holes? I have heard mixed reviews but I think it will be sufficient. Can anyone PLEASE assist me with this . . .? I will take pics if that will help. Thanks a lot.

Re: Rear Speaker Trouble
Good ole Mercs eh?
The trouble is that the W124 has a lovely big boot and a layer of metal-then-insulation-then-carpet to protect the passengers from the sounds of those golf-clubs rattling around. I have just solved the same issue with my 124, but it involved a little butchery; - I have fitted a sub under the first-aid flap on the rear-parcel shelf, with a bass box sitting underneath - i.e. in the boot. If you wanna go down this route, then you can cut a hole in the parcel shelf and metal undeneath - though I would recommend removing the metal (only this stuff) and replacing with you own template. It took some work - I have a custom built box - which is a load of maths - but you end up with the equipment in the boot and the bass in the cabin. No-one can see the speaker is there unless you want them to.., and the sound difference is great. Say the word and I'll take some pics. Good luck. Neil

Removing the rear speakers works very well as ports through to the cabin. You can even put some high end mid to high range tweeters on the shelf to help out a little.
I don't know what the problem could be for you have you looked through the trunk to see if you can see the clips? |

Rear speakers out - where do they go?
This is coming from a novice here, so please have patience with my questions....
I keep hearing that taking out the rear speakers make ideal ports for subwoofers in the trunk. Do the rear speakers get installed anyplace else or is one just left with the front dash + front door speakers plus the subwoofers (in the trunk)? mail2neil - if you mounted your subs under the first aid area, doesn't the (first aid) cover obstruct the sound? Or did you remove the cover? And the subs are showing on the shelf? Maybe the pictures would be helpful, if you please.... I saw a nice picture of an install where the (first aid) cover (recovered with a light, airy fabric) was used over the subs however, I would think it would obstruct the sound, as the lid is solid plastic, unless numerous holes were drilled in it? I pushed out the rear speakers in my '91 300E by getting in the (empty) trunk (laying on my back, looking up into the speakers) and working the clips (that fastened the speakers down) loose with a screwdriver....didn't take much effort, but perhaps your car is different?

Re: Rear speakers out - where do they go?
I have both speakers still in place.., if a little uprated
![]() The sub sits under the first aid flap - which is still in place. With a good amp and sub you don't really have a problem with the flap.. it's certainly got to be better than the sound you'll get from two holes leading to the boot. If you want to do it well.., loose the metal, it reverbs. Put a decent box in the boot, speaker/s pointing up and mounted on the parcel shelf, and you could loose the flap if you like. For the cost of a little sound, I'm happy with the flap if it keeps spying eyes and grubby mits at bay. Next home tomorrow night.., I'll take a snap and post it.
