R12 and R134 use different fittings. I would recommend you have someone more familiar with AC do the work for you. R12, the old stuff, can be had just fine, but be prepared to pay.

Twitch, a clean condensor is a better cooling condensor, for sure. I'm going to take a good look at mine. Most of those mag wheel cleaners are fairly mild, but effective.

Update on the 4.4 BMW, I have it apart and sleeved with iron liners, hyperutectic pistons with high silicone. The OEM pistons had no evidence of tin plating, none.

I've never found a lot of HP in ignition timing. You'll only go as far as 91 or 93 octane fuel will take you. Higher HP engines generally use an ignition "retard" feature for max top end HP.
