I'll bet the voltage regulator is messed up and the battery was overcharging. This will cause the rotten egg smell and the staring issues (battery will no longer hold a strong charge).

If the vent is plugged, wouldn't you create a vacuum that gets stronger as the tank empties? You could try your experiment again, but loosen the fuel filler cap when the fuel gauge shows about 1/2...

If not - light bulb shot, light bulb holder shot, etc... I've read that the alternator will not charge the battery if the battery light...
