I’d suspect more of a dirty/intermittently failing sensor. Or some moisture somewhere…

I know for my 190d there are drop in headlights. What about for the 124 lights? New glass with some quality 4300K LEDs won’t be obnoxious. Some random projector sounds like a recipe for glare.

Pretty sure the FSM has a section on all the different prechambers and their nuances. You can then verify which is which. I had to do this to get the right one for my 1991 300d.
