Intermittent check engine

"Check engine" light comes on, stays on a week or so. Goes off.

Comes on again, stays on a week or so. Goes off.

Wash, rinse, repeat. Four times in last month.

Any ideas? Should I have...

Broke one off.

Had to be towed and have the (remainder of the) plug...
