84 300D turbo diesel has power but will not start or crank!?

I have a 1984 300D turbo diesel that has power to everything (radio, glow plugs, etc) but will not start. I turn the key to let the glow plugs heat up and as soon as the light turns off, I go to start it and nothing! I don't what it could be and all of the fuses are good still. I drove the car yesterday and it ran perfect, as always. Then today this happens. Any Ideas?

Check connection to the starter motor with a multimeter and work your way back to the ignition switch.

If your shifter rattles or is sloppy, you may have bushing issues.
But usually the culprit is a failed NNS, located on the transmission. This electric switch won't allow the car to be started when it's in gear. It is also the back up light switch, do they work?

Look down at your shifter. Is it in park or neutral? It won't crank if you have it in gear. (Ask me how I konw ) If it is in park, then try starting it in Neutral. If that doesn't work then check the wiring to the starter.

Do you hear a "click" or anything when you turn the key?

I agree as to what has been said in the above posts.

there is a small black box on the right inner fender near the battery. has 3 wires going into it and out.
open the cover to expose the 3 screws. jump acress 2 of the screws and the engine should start. small and one of the large screws.

Make sure parking brake is on, selector is in park. turn on key for glow plugs, jump the screws.

This worked for me a couple times when my NSS malfinctioned. I used a pair of needle nose pliers for the jump.

Note: I have the insulated black rubber covers on the handles. don`t know if this makes any difference, thought I would throw this in. think these were Chraftsman.

^ Good point. I have a bump start button for tuning the engine over.

Notes from another forum:
“First make sure the selector is in P or N. Cycle through all the gear positions and try in N.
In front of the battery is a small rectangular box. Use a jumper wire to jump from one of the large posts to the small post with the purple wire. If it cranks, you've got an issue with the neutral safety switch or the ignition switch.
Above the accelerator pedal is a 4-wire plug with a harness that runs down to under the accelerator pedal and to the transmission tunnel. Unplug it, jumper across the two purple wires in the female plug and try to start again. If it starts, you need a NSS.”

The last paragraph is how bo buypass if the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS).
