So i'm driving to work this morning and I see a plane taking off from a local airfield (Longest runway is 1346 m) My first though based on the angle and the airport is that i'm looking at a Citation V....after a second though something told me that it wasn't.

Turns out that I was actually watching an SU-25 on takeoff!

I wonder if it's privately owned or just visiting.....

Not one most folks get to make very often.

( Kind'a wondering how you confused an SU-25 with a C-560 though.

It was just a split second confusion.

1. I wasn't expecting to see a military jet flying out of civilian airport (Russian for that matter)

2. As it came over the trees the angle gave it a straight wing appearance

I forgot you were an airplane guy too... We would have been off on a completely different subject if I had thought of it at the GTG!

When you spend as much time around airports as I do, you learn not to expect anything. The list of things that surprise me just keeps on growing.

I’ve done that same thing a zillion times. At least you got the jet part right.
Heck - I’ve spotted Beech A36’s that turned out to have rotors !! (and I don’t mean the brakes)

haha yep, only so much time in the day to talk; especially at a meet with a supercharger demonstration

We'll save the aircraft discussion for next year.

they are civilian planes now, they would be better off removing the weapons platforms from the wings. They would look and fly better.

I bet those pylons are bolted to the main spar... not all that easy to just remove them willy nilly. Avionics is where you can save some weight on an ex military acft. Modern civilian nav/comms, gps, mfd's, etc are so small these days. Dynan to the rescue

Bolted isn't that big of a deal.
It's when they're C-Max'd that they can really put you into 337ville.

You mean Dynon to the rescue.

Yep - You got that right ! Nothing heavier than old mil VHF/UHF & ADF gear. Not to mention more boxes stuck here and there than you can immagine. What we pulled from the T-28 vs. what we put back in to replace and upgrade with was over 100 lbs.
I'll agree with a Dynon application for an IFR sport aircraft looking for light and flashy glass. Not a VFR ex-mil jet though.

ya what you said. I ALWAYS spell/say it wrong. Last time I looked under a T-28 it looked like a B-17 under there. Boxes boxes boxes, vacuum tubes galore.

I hear ya.
When we cleaned out the old Nav/Comm system in Darby’s, I swear we found radio gear in the tires

. It was everywhere and intertwined with everything else.
The control heads, boxes and antennas were the easy part. Busting into darn near every wiring harness in the plane to pull the wires, leads and coax was the real booger.
All five King components and the PMA icom now live in the right side cockpit panels and there’s still room for the map box!

And boy does the SU25 have a lot of pylons.....
