Which side does the evaporator screen go on?

Finally got the AC box out of the TE -- not the first time this job has been done on this car, either!

The old evaporator was definitely leaking -- bright green fluorescent oil all over the bottom of the case, and the drain hoses are shot (they fell apart coming out, more bits to buy...). It also had copper pipes, so I suspect it's an aftermarket too boot.

Now comes the fun part! The case will NOT fit together properly with the screen installed as it was on the old evaporator (the back, wrapped over the top and bottom). Now, I may be nuts, but I would think that the proper place for the screen is the FRONT of the evaporator, not the rear, and for sure it cannot wrap around, at least on the corners were the case fits tight.

Anybody remember where the factory screen is, and where it fits? The illustration in the manual is about useless, since it doesn't show enough of the evaporator to tell which side the screen is on!

Thanks a bunch!

By the way, this is a JOB -- way too many nuts and bolts and clips, etc. I also ended up replacing all the vac servos, every single one leaked!

If I had the last servo and knew where to put the screen (and hadn't broken the tiny plastic bit that hooks the right floor flap to the left side rod) I'd have the box back in and the vac pump running.

Ah well.

Peter

You know Peter, I couldn't remember from whence it had come when I did the evap in my 124. So I just left it out; hasn't blown up yet. I stared at that sucker for a long time, it wasn't even apparent what the purpose was.

Here's a guess. It protects the fragile evap from shrapnel thrown by the fan?!? So place it between the evap and the squirrel cage.

Other theories on its use and purpose welcome!
