I have a 1988 560 SL that has a severe dwell when selecting from park or neurtal to any drive gear. Then it slams into the selected gear pretty hard. Is this a vacuum associated problem or is it internal to the transmission?

It could be either. I would have this problem checked only by a very knowledgeable tech. Some techs guess at transmission problems.
