Air Con Conversion in UK (190e)

Firstly i wanna apologise for posting another question about converting the air con on 190's, but i cant seem to find any info from any people in the uk. i know this is an american site, but i reckon ive seen a few brits floating around in here.

main problem is no air con working. took it to local air con place, they tell me its the old r12 system and that i need to spend about £200 ($450ish?) to replace what he called the filter housing (down near side of radiator) and to replenish with r134a and an addative.

From reading the posts it looks as tho R12 is still legal in america? but its illegal here as from year 2000, so basically my question is should i just hand over the money, or is there another alternative to getting the system running again?
Is retro-pro any good?

Thanks

Mat
