A/C Compressor Cycling
The a/c compressor on my wife's 98 ML320 is cycling on and off about every two seconds. Thinking it was low on refrigerant, I added about half a can (6 oz) and it continues to do the same thing. I don't have my guages with me, so I'm at a bit of a disadvantage on checking operating pressures. I'll be home in a week but it's pretty warm in south FL right now. Any ideas? Should I add additional refrigerant? Thanks....

This is called "short cycling" and it does indeed indicate a low charge. In most cases 6 oz. will not be near enough to get it working again.
You are CORRECT, you should not proceed without guages connected. There is most likely a leak, but you really can't tell much at this point unless you use a sniffer. If you don't have a sniffer, just charge with a can of 134 with UV dye. After a day or two, then start looking for the dye with a black light. Good luck, |
