A/C problems with my 89 300e
Last year I converted from R12 to 134a. I thought I did it right. I replaced the compressor, reciever/dryer, and the expansion valve. I did a presure test and then recharged the system with 134a.
Being that I did not know how much freon to put into the new system, I just pretty much went by the sight glass and how it felt inside. Well it's been almost one year exactly sence the convertion and now my compressor is starting to make noise. Afew days ago it started blowing hot. After messing with it for a while I found out that it was overcharged and the compressor was locking up. So I drained the system until it was low enough that the compressor wouldn't kick on. I then put in one 15 oz can of 134a and it seemed to be working fine. Then today it started blowing hot again. But this time I can't seem to get the compressor to kick on for more than a few seconds, and when it dose it is making not normal noises. Is my compressor history? Or can it be fixed? It dosen't seem to be leaking any oil, just squeeking when it tries to kick on. It will kick on every minute or so but only stay on for a few seconds. What should my guages be at with 134a? could this be my problem? Any advice on the subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Shawn |

Sounds like you did EVERYTHING correct! I assume that you used a OE NAME brand (MB or Nippondenso) rebuilt A/C compressor! IF not then failure on many aftermarket compressors after 1 year is VERY common.
When converting from R12 to R134a use only 70% of the original fill. ALWAYS use PAG iso46 Oil when converting MB Denso compressors.

Do you think that my compressor could be low on the pag oil? Should I try adding some to the system? I wasn't sure what oil I should use in it. There are several.
Do you know if the compressor can be fixed? Say as if the clutch was going out on it. Do I have to scrap the whole compressor or can it be repaired? And if so who dose that kind of work. Thanks |

Since you mention in your post that compressor is "squeeking", Could it be just a loose belt?. Because if it is a loose built the speed sensor on the compressor will turn it off. Just a thought.
Yes clutch can be repaired, you do not have to scrap the whole compressor, provided that is the only thing failing. I guess your local AC shop should be able to repair the clutch for you.

The belt is tight, and I'm not sure that the clutch is the problem, but when you turn the a/c on the compressor kick's on but only for a few seconds. And it makes a squeeking noise for those few seconds.
It will continue to try and kick on every minute or so. But it never stays on for more than a few seconds. I guess I'm gonna have to take it off and take it to a shop. Wasn't really wanting to have to do that again so soon |

Have you tried turning the compressor by hand to check for resistance?
