'87 300E Blower Motor

I'm trying to figure out why my blower fan (heating/cooling) is not working. It works intermit. but seems to have gone out completely. Is there another fuse than the one in teh fuse box to check before performing surgery?

Thx

yes, there's an other fuse.
On the front-left inner fender, there's a black plastic box, about 1 1/2in long with 2 wires coming out of it.. Open it up. There's a flat fuse in it.
Make sure it is not borken and is tighly screwed in place.

Found it - Thanks! Unfortunately it looks OK which is what I was guessing. Any idea how hard it is to pull the wiper motor etc... to get to the blower?

Did you check for voltage at the fuses rather than just look at them? Past threads have told of fuses appearing to be okay only to find that when they replaced or checked for voltage they were not working. I think others will chime in with the more knowledgable details if you take the preliminary steps . . .

Try to pull the center of the strip fuse up, they often crack across and make intermittant contact but look fine.

Also, if the fan comes on when you hit a bump sometimes, the brushes are worn out, power is fine (had a work van I had to stop and bang on the blower motor once in a while, we put four or five motors in it over 275000 miles).

Havent pulled a wiper motor yet, but will be doing so in the TE shortly to lubricate the wiper arm slide pin, something I suggest you dom while you are in there, it's much cheaper than a new motor.

If you don't have CD or service manual, there is a very good pictorial article buried somewhere here in the archives. Do a search for 124 blower motor or something like that to find the thread.

It shows how to pull the wiper motor and the blower motor. It is not too tough, but will involve several hours of careful work. When you do it, raise the hood to the full upright position with a light fixture straight overhead.

Good luck,

300 blower

After checking the external fuse,
You can check the power and control signal to the blower at a plug
located above and behind the brake booster.
It has 3 wires, black, red and yellow.
With the plug in the socket and the climate control on, check to see
that you have +12volts on the red, a good ground on the
black and 3 to 10volts on the yellow.
If the yellow wire's voltage is a problem that points to a problem with the control module.
If these all check out then the problem is with the blower control module or the blower itself.

I would suspect worn brushes, I have successfully rebuilt my blower which included replacing brushes and cleaning/lubing bearings. I have a write up if you go that route.

Good luck.
