Cleaning air intake below plate, 190E

Hello all.
I have heard that cleaning the plate and the air intake of the fuel distributor with a cloth and some solvent makes wonders to idle smoothness and engine hesitating. Has anyone tested that?
I am curious about how can that part of the fuel distributor get so dirty as someones say, with a black rubbish. I suppose that the only way is due to backfiring of the engine, is this true?

The procedure is: remove the air filter housing, and with a cloth carefully clean, first the plate and its edge, then deflect it down and the surroundings of the fuel distributor as deep as you can (a couple of inches or so, the rest is unreachable), with great care not to allow dirt enter into the engine.

Best regards,
Sergio
