1980 500sel

Just bought a a 1980 SEL ....seems to be in good shape. I have mostly owned and have performed minor repairs on Volvo, so this is my 1st MB experience. I have a few concerns..hoping I could get some help.

The Idle doesn't seem to want to kick-down. Adjustment screw, or something else like a sensor or relay ???

Secondly...the Climate controll seems to be getting power and when I turn the dial I hear a clicking ( relay) sound, but no blower no AC compressor activity..no NOTHING!

Lastly it's a 80' 500SEL. I can't find a lot of info on the car, carfax on the VIN starts in 1995. The local body shop told me they didn't even show an 500SEL for 1980 on their database. Was the 80' 500 SEL made for Europe only or made for distribution other than in the US?

Any help is appreciated....

Doctor Mike

The 500SEL started with the W126 body in 1981 I think. So a 1980 would be a 450SEL W116. Are you sure it is a 1980, or even a 500SEL? Post the vin, maybe it is a euro car?

Btw their is a kick down switch under the pedal, I would check that first. I think it is on the rod that goes down into the gas pedal. I'm not 100% sure I have never really looked at it.

The 500SEL was available in Europe in 1980. Didn't make it to the US officially until 1984, and probably only because so many gray market cars were taking sales from the 380SE/L.

Does the VIN begin with WDB126037 or WDBCA37?

If you hear clicking when you turn on the ACC then it's probably not the fuse. However, the first thing to do with any used MB is replace all the fuses regardless of how they look. Should cost you all of $5 from an MB dealership and probably closer to $2 from a VW parts store. If the fuses don't fix it, you probably need a new blower motor (~$125) and a freon charge. Don't get roped into a R134a conversion. R12 is not illegal and the W126 AC system was marginal when new and will likely be borderline pathetic on R134a.

I'm guessing your car has ACC. I've never seen a 500SEL with manual AC controls.

Idles too high? You don't give much to go on but my psychic powers say faulty idle valve or vacuum leak.

Valuable info

thanks for the info. The VIN is WDB12603212006646. Inside the doorjamThere is a plate with the importers name..SO I really became confused at that point.

Some of the vehicles information stickers are in German only if that gives any clues.

It sounds like a euro, that means it has more power than the US cars! My advice is to do a search and learn a little about this model. MB are different animals from most other cars but are simple to work on. I would sudjest starting out by changing all of the fluid's and filters. You should also use only quality German filters. Also you probably have a power steering filter, that is usually never changed, most people don't know it is in their. Fastlane can sell you the fuses, I replaced them all on my SDL and some things started to work better mostly lights. They come in packs of 10 I think it was like $3 for all of them
