Weird headlights and clicking noise. . .
Got a problem, and I'm trying to solve it myself before spending $80 an hour for an expert.
1985 500 SEL About a year ago, I noticed my headlights (when in high-beam) flashing between high beam, and high+low beam. When the headlights were in low beam, everything was normal. I thought maybe a relay was going bad, but couldn't identify anything abnormal. After about two days, the problem went away completely. Today as I was driving, the exact same problem revisited me. Except now, when I turn the car off, I hear a clicking sound from underneath the passanger foot rest area. After about 3 minutes, the clicking goes away. So I listened for the clicking while driving and sure enough, when the hedlights were on the blink (no pun intended), the clicking sound was present. So I tore apart the passanger side footrest, and found a black box underneath a black plastic shroud with a SRS warning label on the top (referring to the red 18 pin plug - not to disconnect). This little black box with two plugs going into it was clicking. It wasen't hot, but noticing another box (silver Bosch) next to it (part of the SRS) I was scared to proceed any further. Is this a problem I can fix myself (assuming I don't mess with the red plug)? Any ideas on what this little black box is? Will the problem create other problems if I take no corrective action? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. . . Thanks! |
