A/C Question

I just took a drive with the AC running and it seems to only cool down 10 degrees compared with the outside temp with full fan running at the vents. However with the lowest fan position, the air coming out was over 18 degrees cooler than the outside. Why is that? How cold should the center vents be with a properly charged system at full fan?

I have not recharged as I am debating on R12 or R134.

This is a 89 300E.

Thanks.

I'm trying to understand the comment you made above. I take it to mean you're trying to decide whether to charge with R12 or R134A? If so, there is no debate. Your system uses one or the other. Someone with the necessary skills will need to decide which system you have, then go about a systematic investigation.

Inadequate vent temps can be caused by many things. A low refrigerant charge is but one. Take it to a tech and have him analyze the a/c system if you feel the cooling is insufficient.
