I've got an '89 190e 2.6 with about 90,000 miles. It uses about a quart of oil every 500 mi. I've heard that these vehicles usually need valve stem seals or valve guide replacement due to high oil consumption at abouth this mileage. Can the seals be replaced without removing the head? What is your recommendation?

Yes it can be done w/o removing head--had it done on my 260E about two months ago with 180,000 miles--had been using a qt every thousand and slowly increased to using a qt every 600. Now I can go full 3,000 miles between changes w/o adding any oil.

Sasfed,

How much did this cost you?? Where did you have the car serviced? How many hours did they charge for labor??

My oil consumption isnt that bad, but if the price is pretty good, I wouldnt mind spending a couple of hundred bucks on a good investment.

Davek,

You should make a quick decision about fixing your engine, otherwise you'd burn oil and you'd have to change your catalic converter, which will run you about $200 bucks.

Happy driving,
vu

Vu has got it right. Most places that POS 200 dollar cat will cost 2-3 times that. The real thing lists for over $1700 just for the part.

Burning more than a quart every 1000mi is filling the intake, combustion chamber, ring lands, and exhaust with carbon. The seals require 3.4 hours by the MB time guide and list for $14.50. Use only genuine MB seals.
