1990 Mercedes model 350 SDL Plastic Radiator

I was told today that the top connection to my radiator was broken and part of the pipe remained in the top radiator hose - which caused a loss of the anti-freeze and overheating of the engine. My mechanic thinks that there is no way to repair the short ( about an inch or so) plastic pipe that remains on the radiator because the hose slips off the pipe even after the hose has been tightened. He says the plastic radiator prevents him from fixing the pipe and that I need a new radiator! It appears as if there is enough of the radiator pipe left that if I could remove the part of the pipe that's in the hose and reconnect it to the radiator by using some type of pipe like PVC or whatever combined with something like epoxy to fix this problem. Help!

You could do that as a short term fix, but it would be a real hack job. Your mechanic is right you need a new radiator.

Thanks for your reply. My next question is: Why did the plastic radiator pipe shear so evenly? The car was recently hit in the rear end very hard during an accident and it hasn't been fixed yet. Is there any possibility that the uneven twisting torque exerted between the engine and radiator could have caused the pipe that connects them to shear?

Thats a known failure for these cars, they all will do it eventually. The plastice becomes brittle with age, using the proper coolant helps but eventually the neck will just snap off. Do a search thier has been a lot of discussion about this in the past.

I hope your car comes threw alright, hopefully the insurance company doesn't try to total it.

The accident had nothing to do about it. What happened was that the plastic became brittle from the drastic changes in temperature. If the radiator pipe was experiencing a torsional load, or a torque on the pipe, it would have failed at a 45 degree angle. And as you said, it failed evenly which decribes that it failed in uniaxial shear stress from the pressure generated in the cooling system.

Don't worry do what Homer Simpson would do: Drink a few beers that should kill all of those pesky brain cells.
