Mercedes Benz Part # 000 989 10 25

I am getting ready to do a cooling system flush and was interested in a product I saw in a previous thread (red arrow pointing to the smaller bottle which is the Lemon Acid):

Mercedes Benz Part # 000 989 10 25
Price: $27.60 Canadian tax included

Is there a recommended cheaper alternative?

This product sounds suspiciously similar to citric acid. Citric acid is available from Prestone, called either SuperFlush or something else. Next time you're at the auto parts store, check the ingredients of the available flush products and look for citric acid.

The citric flush is utilized on engines that had an oil mixing with coolant issue. If you find your cooling system contaminated with oil this would be a good choice for clearing that oily froth from the cooling system.

I disagree. Oily residue is flushed out using a detergent. Some have reported using Shout, Dawn, or any number of non-chlorinated, non-abrasive detergents as a flushant for oily residue. Citric acid flushes are designed to remove hard deposits, such as corrosion. We use citric acid in the lab to remove light rust from steel without attacking the base steel.

Mercedes says:
Oil in cooling system, use Alkaline cleaner: disodiumtrixosilicate-pentahydrate.
Part number is 001 986 21 71 (500 grams)

I used Prestone radiator flush on mine, the bottle said it was safe on aluminum engines. MB re-bottles a lot of other makes products, their line of cleaning products is a perfect example of this.

You better make sure you get all the deposits out or you are going to dislodge them, and then break your waterpump.

That was meant to be done every few years at mercedes, but chances are, if you do it, it will be the car's first time.

I agree. My experience with flushes is if you don't know for sure its been done regularly its a gamble. If your not having heat problems your probably better off to skip the acid flush. All your likely to do is dislodge something and plug up your radiator. I had an old Ford truck that I did a flush on years ago. Almost immediately after doing it I started having heat problems. Turns out I plugged up over 50% of the radiator when I flushed the engine.

If you pull the thermostat and find lots of scale built up around it, and also around the hose connections, I'd skip the flush. Unless you don't mind possibly having to buy a new radiator.

Did you use Prestone Super Flush or Prestone Radiator Cleaner?

I don't remember, probably the cheaper one. Nothing came out it was probably a wast of money. I changed the radiator shortly after that, but the flush had nothing to do with it.
