Talking M 119.972 Engine... One of the greatest engines or not?

I was told by my MB parts connection that if the engine in my car is maintained well it would last almost forever; or at least 500,000 miles. He said that this engine has its problems with the peripheral items (crummy wire harness, ETA problems, etc.) but the motor itself is flawless. I kind of believe him because at 116K miles, there is no tick-tick-tick sounds from the rocker arms or any other sounds except for the "whooshing" air of the fan blades and the humming of the motor. Does anybody agree/disagree and why?

The M119 engine is a masterpiece of engineering - truly one of the greatest automobile engines of all time.

It's my personal opinion that the "family" (many design similarities) of the M111 four, M104 six and M119 V-8 are some of the best gasoline engines ever dropped into an engine bay. Despite some problems with head gaskets on the M104, all three engines are built to a high standard, last a long time and have bottom ends that don't seem to wear out.

I have seen examples of all three with 400,000kms and more, and all were in tip-top shape with no major repairs. The M119 in 4.2L and 5.0L form is a great beast with a few minor problems easily solved (tubes) and the overall reliability of the engine is superb. Thanks to this, the W124 400E and E420 cars are some of the best cars at rock bottom prices today.

In the W140, the M119 engine is thankfully problem free, since many other aspects of the car can run an unsuspecting owner to the poor house.

OMG !!! What are you doing to get your car up to 4000 rpm ?? Driving at light speed to see the fuel tank needle slowly move towards empty ?? I can see my needle move while sitting in traffic !!

At first I felt bad that my car had such a low MPG until I looked up the fuel economy of SUV's. Hummer H2- 8 mpg

Or you can get 11,193 miles per gallon in this SPEED DEMON !!
