Hey everyone,
My 1985 500sel euro had been making a cchhh noise when I get on the gas. I figured it was the bad head gasket which I just fixed . That was not it. The engine is in great shape and runs great other than that. It does not sound like metal in the engine grinding more like it is a fan or something any ideas.

Does it sound like pressurized air? If it does maybe there is a vaccum leak somwhere.

Hey Dan, I'll bet you have a leak at the exhaust manifold to head union. If I heard what you said correctly "cccccchhhhhh", that definitely sounds like high pressure exhaust noise. Try blocking the tailpipe momentarily with a tennis ball or some rags in you hand (operant word "momentarily") to see if you can make the noise louder and get a fix on where it is coming from. You may need it up in the air and you may need a helper..Have a "ball"...Jeff

Dan, gotta know what's broken before you can figure out the cost of fixing. If it's an exhaust manifold gasket, parts are less that $30.00.

Would holding a tennis ball over the tail pipes be the best way to see or is there a easier way to test it?
thanks
