1999 E300 low speed clunking, transmission?

Hello,

I have a 99 E300, and I was wondering if you'd ever heard of
transmission troubles. I have 163,000 miles on the car(mostly
highway). I have a clacking and slinging type noise from the car
with the shifter in P and in N. I also hear a clunk and feel the
car jolt slightly while driving slowly in D or in R. There is a
whine sound that comes from the car as you accelerate from 10 to
around 25mph. Above 25 or so mph there is no symptoms of any
problem at all. Do you have any ideas. I wonder if this is
something that can be fixed without needing a whole new tranny.

Thanks,
Ben
