After all the questions I've presented and this list has answered with thoughtful suggestions, I can finally offer a simple solution.
94 & 95 wagons were still the 124 chassis . In the 124 Wagon the traditional CD instasllation was housed outside the rr fender covering. Howevewr, Alpine offers a 630 CD player coupled thru a MB or Cruthfield adabpter cabler.
You can remove the "First Aid" kit from the rr housing and with the casette load up and the cable facing to the rear, a 630 Alpine fits within the holder for the First Aid kit and a firm push will seat the cover. The only slight obstruction is the tab from the rear lamp assembly that fortunately just accomodates the Alpine CD player.
The Crutchfield $20 adapter "MBZ-Alp" cable is limited supply. The Alpine CD unit is $100 eBay and a 6 CD holder $20. The MB OEM "radio" has the connector in the rr fender well ready for plug-en-play with the Alpine CD unit. The MB OEM "radio" has a "CD" selection button that activates the Alpine player.
