I think the new ticking is a pulley bearing. Jury-rigged stethoscope seems to eliminate under-the-valve-cover source. Ticking goes away when I rev motor (maybe just can't hear it?). I plan to take serp belt off and see if pullies turn freely. I'm fairly handy and have some tools.

So the question is; Do I need special tools to press in new pulley bearings? I can see it's simple enough to replace pulley, but do I have to dig out bearings? If I buy new pulley does it contain the bearing or do I buy them seperately? I want to have the parts handy before I start.

Invest in a *real* stethoscope... only about $10 and find the real source of the noise. Otherwise you could end up spending BIG $$$ chasing it. Don't just focus on pulley bearings.... a common source is bad bushings in the little tensioner shock.

I use a straw broom. I put my ear on the straw and the end of the handle on the part to be checked. Works great.

I'm pretty sure JoeR is talking about the part that is called "belt tensioner damper" in fastlane. there is a pic. check it out, then find it on your engine (lower left of upper timing cover). You should be able to (carefully, as it is close to fan) grab this damper and stop it from making noise, if it is in fact the problem. Mine makes a loud noise, but only when in rev. or drive, because of the extra load on the engine. This noise, in my opinion, is actually more of a rattling than a ticking, so it may not be your problem.
