Talking 89 300e head redone no loud ticking why? got it.

1989 300e got the head rebulit new valve guides on intake and ex. new timming chain head gasket new head bolts new valve spring on #5 ex new rotor new distriber cap new wires after putting it all together there is a loud ticking sound it has an over head cam some of the rockers seam loose is my cam bad or is there some thing i'm missing? Love the car has 202,--- miles on her just dont want to get rid of her rides like new any help would be great. Thanks,

This ones easy....


I don't think you did anything wrong. The threads that hold the rocker arms in place strip in the head from fatigue(they are aluminum). Buy a helicoil or timesert set and fix it.
If you did the head ... I'm sure you can install the inserts without nessary warnings of being careful not to leave stray chips behind.

If you machined the head, did you replace the valve shim pads? If you didn't, the lifters are probably operating out of their normal range of operation.

Hi Samiam4 That could be it? Do you or anybody know what the correct intake and exhaust clearances are that would be a great help.

Question

Hi Autozen
Yes the head was machined the rockers ride on the over head cam no lifters do I still need shims? If so what are the valve clearances so I know what size shims to get? Do the shims go under the rocker on top of the valve stem?

that noise is probobly comming from your lifters
u need to fill them with oil and press inside with a small allen key or something to completely fill them with oil

Lifters are in the rockers duh! I found them. Will try to pump them up.

Talking It was the lifters

It was the lifters I think after they cleaned the head something was blocking or stuck in the lifters 3 of them so I just tap on them with small wrench and she runs like a champ.
