1996 C280 - Heater motor not working?

Hello, my 1996 C280 w/78k miles has stopped pumpping out heat! The digital control panel still seems to operate the A/C comp, recirc function, vents, etc, but I have no fan motor.

Is this a common problem? Is it usually the control panel, a relay, the motor itself, or...?

Any help would be great...I am freezing

Usually the blower motor regulator, need to test it, like Manny said, need to check the basics first. Also seen the cowl drain clog up on 202's and allow water to collect in the plenum, then freeze at night and make the fan not run, which can lead to a failure of the regulator, so keep it shut off until it can be chaecked out.

Gilly, thank for the the reply. The fuse is good but I suspect it might be the resistor. Is it possible to change only the resistor, not the entire motor assy? On my BMW, the high speed fan still worked when the resistor went bad, but on this car none of the fan speeds work.

Thanks

It's a little more complex than some resistors, it's a blower control module. It is replaceable seperately. You could also try jumping 12V to the blower to make sure it runs.

Hello again Mercedes experts! It has almost a year since this probably showed up last but it is now -20C and I have no heat Same symptons as last time....digital climate control read-out works fine, show the correct temp. and fan speed but nothing comes out of the vents and the fan doesn't run.

I don't want to spend a fortune replacing all the parts but my local shop has no idea what might be wrong. If I had to buy just one part would you guess it should be the blower control module?

Thanks

test power to motor

Test the power to the fan motor using a volt meter; if you have power the motor needs to be replace, if not it is probably the module that was mentioned.

In the interim, you can get an inexpensive electric heater that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket

I need to get to the bottom of this cold problem! I suppose the next step is to test to see if the motor is getting power. Where is the motor located? Is it easily accessable for testing?

Am I correct in assuming that if the motor is getting 12V then it needs to be replaced and if there is no voltage present at the motor I will need to replace the blower control module?

Thanks

Well, if it is like my car ( see sign. ), remove the soundpanel on the passenger side ( 3 screws at the front edge, under the dash), look up and you will see 2 clips that slide side-ways.
Take off the cover and voila, there is your blower motor.

Once you've located the blower, if you've got 12V then you need a new fan, otherwise your problem is sompleace else - module, fuse, switch, etc.
