Huge and permanently smacked on the grille!

On the W163 and R129, that is...

The detent position is when the base is aligned with the housing. In which case, is slightly racked back.

And yeah, it's straight up on my Dad's '71...

I usually keep mine slightly angled back. But the other day some caution tape caught it and pulled it forward, sideways and down. (if that makes sense) It bothered the heck out of me until I could fix it.

Mine sits straight up (w126 300SD) and it looks pretty decent there.
Traffic pile-ons and passing trucks doing 90 on the freeway in rain + 30MPH wind caused it to bend back the other way sadly

I have drivin my car beyond 100MPH and it should stand straight up (or slanted if that is where you started) the whole time if there is no headwind (good spring).

Do I drive fast?

I cant drive my car if the star is askew. I like mine exactly centered and with a slight backwards rake. My family thinks I am crazy. This alignment process can take several tries and is tedious. I sometimes have to stop several times before it is just right
They just don't understand
I am glad you all do... my support group.

Funny it drives me nuts as well when the star is not the way it is supposed to be. My 190E needs a new one since everytime I close the hood it needs to be adjusted most times. Can be a very tedious little thing to get it back straight. Get in look, get out adjust, back in, oh no, back out....

I'm glad to read this. I thought I might be a little off in the brain for doing this but now I feel much better to know I have company!

I think it may be hereditary. My dad drives Lincolns, has all his life and he is 82. Told me he got in the car a year or so ago was tooling down the road and kept telling my mother that something was wrong with the car.
Didn't feel right.
Soon figured out someone had broken off his hood ornament. He was devestated until it was replaced.
I too am glad to know I am among like minded nuts!

I bought a new one yesterday from the stealership for 20 euro which is 35 Aussie dollars! Someone is getting ripped off.

I hav'nt fitted it yet, do I just drop it in (hole currently empty) and turn the collar section through 90 degrees?

Mike.

Mercedes-Benz's quality went downhill in my opinion when the star started leaning down.
Thanks

I would like to know if anyone has a clue when they changed the trunk star from metal/chrome to plastic chrome.

For reference I had a 1972 108...it was metal/chrome. I now have a 1988 124..it is plastic/chrome.

I found out when some kid stole the one off of the 124.

Really? It must have been aftermarket. My W126 is metal chrome, and I'm pretty sure the W140's and W210's are to.
