Unhappy 280se won't start

Hi, i have a 1972 280se. It used to run great. Then problems. The engine was rebuilt, but never able to start. Trying again with new mechanic. Same problem ,turns but won't start. He's thinking maybe the relay? Its getting gas, compression ect. Before I invest more money in the wrong part, could some help me with this question?

it gets gas, but what about spark?
Gas+Spark=explosion=running engine...
Thanks
David

If it has gas and spark. my bet is on the timing. I bet who ever rebuilt it has the chain a tooth off or the car needs to be timed.
Thanks
David

Thanks for the reply, yes it has spark also. I belive they checked the timing also, what about the fuel pump or replacing the relay. Could this be it?

Thanks Dave, it does get spark, gas and compresssion, I did get a new timing chain when the redid the engine, but it wasn't starting before they rebuilt the engine either. Still wondering if this could be the relay or pump?
