nonworking cruise control on 1993 190 2.3

Any hints how to test/repair my nonworking cruise control on my 1993 190E 2.3? MB Dealer here in VA wants 1600$ for repair which I guess means ripping evrything out. Car was only bought 4 weeks ago from this MB main dealer but I forgot to check the cruise. Are there any easy ways to check connections before going after the hardware? It seemed that at first operating attempt the cruise picked up for a short moment only to disengage again. ??
Thanks so much and what a great site this it!! Happy Holidays.

Not sure about the testing part but if you end up needing to rplace the components try this place. Got mine from there 2 years ago and not a hic cup since.

Non-working cruise control

I bought a 1989 300E about 5 years ago and within 4 weeks of purchasing it, the cruise control went out. On a 300E (W124), I understand that this is typical around 100,000 miles (car had 96,000 on it at the time).
The cruise control amplifier was replaced (you can get the part for around $200 if you look around) but I had it done by my local independent shop (trusted, trustworthy and friendly) and paid around $450 for parts & labor.

Personally, I think that a $1600 quote is somebody trying to pull your pants over your eyes in order to get into your wallet.

Take care. Merry Christmas to all!!
