Self Leveling On W124 Models

I have a general question about the self leveling system on the W124.I remember that many years ago I installed regular shocks on a W123 wagon with self leveling because I did not want to spend the money and rebuild the original system,I discovered that the body had the holes for regular shocks, like a sedan, covered with plastic caps,so,I disconected the original system and installed two gas shocks...and they did just fine for me at that time. How about the W124?,can you still convert them so easy like the old ones?
