New shocks, need dust boots?

Oh great and knowledgeable ones . . .

I replaced the rear shocks on my 79 240d with Bilsteins (+ springs, but that is a long story). The old shocks had the piston on top and a dust boot. The new shock had the piston on the bottom and no dust boot. Doest this sound ok? Do I need a dust boot? The old boots were too shot to think about removing and swapping.

Many thanks!
