722.6 Tranny Updates

I am going to drain the pan and converter and put in fresh fluid. This is for a 99 E300 TD. So, my question is what updates can be done at this time? Puting a magnet perhaps? TIA.

PS, if you could put part numbers too, that would be excellent as no one has been able to do that as of this date.

So far, I have gotten word from the dealership that it involves a magnet, a couple of plastic caps for stuff in the valve body and some sort of seal.

Magnet : 220 271 00 98
Long Cap: 140 271 07 82
Short Cap: 140 271 08 82

trans updates

the caps they mention require that the valvebody be removed to install, unless you want to remove the valve body, i would leave the caps alone. the magnet is good, there is an electrical plig on the passengerside front that should be replaced, the tend to leak fluid pased the orings, send me your vin number and i will get you a part number.

My VIN is WDBJF25H4XA903171

I will be dropping the pan and at the same time the valve body for the updates.

You can't just add the caps, the old conductor plate won't accept the caps, you'd need to replace the conductor plate, and I think you'd need to order the caps also. On your 99 it probably has the caps anyways, I may have info on production phase-in on the caps and magnet pad.
If a valve body is replaced, that does include the new style conductor plate with the caps already installed. Anyone needing to replace the valve body DON'T discard the caps! They are NOT "shipping" caps.

Keep metal particles out of the electronic shift valves.
I did find out for AKLIM that the caps were introduced as of Aug 1 1997. The bulletin states that new caps are provided on all new conductor plates and valve bodies. I know they are on the new valve bodies, I don't recall seeing them on a new conductor plate, but could be. IF they don't come with one, and your old conductor plate doesn't have them to swap over, I really recommend getting them. Not many MB's made prior to 8/1/97 with the 722.6, mainly I think it was the V8 S Class and SL. I have a post here somewhere with the intro dates for the various models

You're thinking about it wrong. 97MY production began summer 1996, meaning a year of cars (all 97's are 722.6) was made with 722.6 trannies and no caps. 1998 models began production in the fall of 1997.

No, ahhh, I don't think I'm thinking of it wrong exactly. I found the list I typed up about when the 722.6 was introduced into the various models:
OK, here's the info on when the 722.6 was introduced:
*from 03/95 in the C140 with engine M120 (S600 Coupe)
*from 09/95 in the W/V 140 with engines M119 and M120 (S500 and S600 sedans, long and short wheelbase)
*from 09/95 in the R129 with engines M119 and M120 (SL500 and SL600)
*from 01/96 in the W210 with engine M119 (E420)
*from 08/96 for all MB passenger cars with 4,5, or 6 cylinder engines.
Gilly

So prior to August 1 1997 (which yes is when you'd expect 1998 model year vehicles to be in production roughly), you have V8 and V12 129's and 140's with the 722.6, and the E420 210 chassis, plus every 1997 model, that would be the only ones which wouldn't have the caps. I guess I should have included "E420 and ALL 1997", and while I'm at it the early ML's also wouldn't have the caps, they started making those way before Aug 1997. Sorry if I sounded confused, maybe I should have FOUND this list and pasted it on the previous post, maybe I would have stated it differently. Mainly I was trying to point out that from 1998 model year forward, the transmissions have the caps, so relatively speaking a small amount of 722.6's don't have them.

Well, got the pan dropped and made 2 updates. The magnet and the wet electrical plug on the driver side. Came with white O-rings instead of the orange. The fluid was brown and when we drained it from the pan, it looked almost black. I can't say it drives much different from the past either. Just a piece of mind sorta thing. Besides, I didn't see much sludge or any, for that matter, at the bottom.

Aklim - what exactly did you do with that big round wet electrical plug then? I just noticed mine was wet the other day and I want to fix it. Can you provide me with part numbers, cost and effort involved to do it? When I get that info from you, I'll iclude it in a post I'm going to make about it if that's okay witth you.

Thanks.
